Alberta Urban Municipalities Association

 
Mandate:
The general improvement of Municipal Government and Administration in Alberta by the following means:
A. Advancing the organization as an agency for the cooperation of Alberta Municipalities in all questions pertaining to Municipal Government and Administration;
B. Advocating legislation and programs, both of Canada and of Alberta, supporting effective municipal governance and municipal interests in general;
C. Holding Annual Conventions and other meetings and events for discussion, education, information and resolutions on the above subjects;
D. Cooperation with the Alberta Government in the continued development of sound municipal government in the Province, to recommend amendments to Alberta legislation, which may affect the affairs of municipalities, and to advance the interests of municipalities with all provincial ministries and other organizational units;
E. Cooperation with any other society or association in Canada in matters of mutual municipal interest;
F. Fostering and organizing united action for the protection of individual Municipalities and municipal interests as a whole; and
G. Delivering services to Municipalities including establishing other organizations for that purpose.
 
Composition:
1 President
2 Directors appointed by the City of Calgary, one of whom shall be designated by the City as Vice-President for Calgary
2 Directors appointed by the City of Edmonton, one of whom shall be designated by the City as Vice-President for Edmonton
3 Directors representing Cities up to 500,000 population
3 Directors representing Towns
3 Directors representing Villages
1 Director representing Summer Villages

Board members must be elected officials.

1. 1905 The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) is founded.
2. 1980 May, Objects of the Association Terms of Reference and mandate for the Body.
3. 1996 July 15, AUMA Bylaw
4. 2003 September 08, AGS2003-43 Legislative Governance Review Final Report. Council membership remains the same.
5. 2004 June 07, IGA2004-21 Review of the AUMA proposed bylaws.
6. 2005 October 17, IGA2005-20 That Council appoint, at its annual Organizational Meeting, one of its representatives to the AUMA to be a member of the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
7. 2013 October 21, Bylaw 40M2011 coming into force. To discontinue the use of the title "Alderman" in favour of the title "Councillor".
